Stuck In AUDITIONS With Patrick Stewart

AUDITIONS!

The Theatre Cosmic will be holding auditions for our 2013 Minnesota Fringe Festival show, STUCK IN AN ELEVATOR WITH PATRICK STEWART by Brandon Taitt, directed by Kevin T. Houle.

Auditions will be held Sunday, May 5 and Monday, May 6 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m at Patrick's Cabaret, 3010 Minnehaha Ave S., Minneapolis, MN 55406. Actors will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis and do not need to stay for the entire audition period.
(Callbacks, if necessary, will be held the evening of Wednesday, May 8th at the Playwrights' Center.)

Please prepare a 1-2 minute contemporary comic monologue and a 1-2 minute Shakespearean monologue. A current resume and photo are preferred, but not required.

There will be a couple of rehearsals in June, and a more concentrated rehearsal period in July; performances are August 3-10 at the Red Eye Theater in Minneapolis. Actors may receive a portion of ticket sales as compensation.

STUCK IN AN ELEVATOR WITH PATRICK STEWART takes place at a science fiction convention in 1988, complete with authentic cosplay, autograph seekers, fan fiction, and some ardent but socially awkward Trekkies. Some lucky(?) fans have a close encounter with a troubled Patrick Stewart, who, after the debut season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, longs to return to his Shakespearian roots because he sees absolutely no future for himself as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard.

The following roles will be cast:

PATRICK STEWART: 47 – British Shakespearean actor, star of the TV series “Star Trek: The Next Generation” as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard. Hopes to return to the theater, feels he has “sold out”.

DANIEL JIMMIES: 16 – Extremely geeky, intelligent but naive, low self-esteem, knows anything and everything about sci-fi, especially Star Trek. Admires Patrick Stewart and “Captain Picard”.

JAKE: Late 20’s – Friend of DANIEL and NEIL. Runs a Star Trek fan club. Very matter-of-fact, levelheaded. Dressed as Spock from “Star Trek”

NEIL: Early 20’s – Friend of DANIEL and JAKE. Boisterous, hotheaded, has a habit of speaking in Klingon. Dressed as a Klingon from “Star Trek”.

DOCTOR WHO ATTENDEE: 30’s – Dressed as Tom Baker’s “Doctor Who”. Rude, dismissive. Speaks in a fake British accent.

TOM: 30’s – Convention organizer, accommodating but overwhelmed. (Will consider casting a female in this role.)

DAVID/Convention Guest: Patrick’s Hollywood agent; also appears as a sci-fi convention guest dressed in costume

DEBBIE/Convention Guest: a secretary for CAA; also appears as a sci-fi convention guest dressed in costume

'Stuck' in Pre-production

After a productive production meeting this past weekend, things are off and running for Stuck In An Elevator With Patrick Stewart.

While our Tech Director, Ryan Julien, ponders ways to create an elevator onstage (that can be set-up before and struck after every performance), I wrote up an ad for a Stage Manager, while Brandon got stuck with the heavy workload of securing audition space, contacting someone about designing a logo, researching the launch of a Kickstarter campaign, and writing the final draft of the script. Suck are the perils of a producer/playwright!

With auditions tentatively scheduled for May 5th and 6th, I already have a draft of an audition notice ready to go but still need to create and audition form and info sheet. I've also been thinking a lot how to conduct auditions and what kind of talent pool will show up. Is it better to use readings from the script or have the actors perform prepare monologues? Will an audition location outside the Twin Cities inner core limit the number of people who decide to audition? What if we find a great actor with a beautiful head of hair to play the role of 'Patrick Stewart' and he refuses to shave his head? Such are the perils of a director!

With all this work going on ahead of time, here's hoping the entire production is a successful enterprise.

Get it? Enterpise - Star Trek - Patrick Stewart?!?

Get used to it folks - I got a million of 'em!
